Courneya's group at the University of Alberta, in Canada, has put out a new study which claims to be the first one to look at physical activity and quality of life in kidney cancer (they're probably right about being the first ones).
They mailed 1,654 kidney cancer survivors questionnaires to record the two variables as well as demographic and medical history questions. 703 responded.
Results: 56% of respondents were sedentary; 18% didn't meet the guidelines for physical activity (remember, the basic guidelines are 3x/week for about an hour of brisk walking or what have you); 12% met the guidelines, and 14% exceeded the guidelines. No surprise, higher levels of activity correlated with higher levels of QOL.
Not much else can be said, as I only had access to the abstract and not the full article. Basically, this is one of those early-days studies that has to state the obvious before moving on to more meaningful work, because the obvious had never been stated before.
What I'll take away from this is, that cancer of the kidney does not preclude people from exercising, as 14% of the people were able to exceed the minimum guidelines.
