I was first introduced to the concept of recreation therapy at the Get REAL & HEEL Breast Cancer Rehabilitation Program at UNC. There, it was about relaxation, meditation, and doing things that you could concentrate on to the exclusion of your worries.
First Descent, a non-profit founded in 2000 by Brad Ludden when he was only 18, would be an example of recreation therapy, which, instead of being about relaxation, is about exhilaration. They're main schtick is white water kayaking for cancer survivors, but they also do things like rock climbing, marathons, and all other adventure sports. They target young adult cancer survivors (18-40 years old), and provide all their program FREE due to generous donations. The programs are all staffed by volunteers, which is amazing considering the amount of qualification the volunteers would need.
They're based out of Colorado, but run programs all over the US. Since it's my home, I'd like to point out they've got some kayaking trips coming up in North Carolina in May. Check out their calendar and how to sign up here
