This weekend was the Perth Relay for Life at Challenge Stadium. They raised $656,378 for the Cancer Council, surpassing their goal for this year. I went down to support my friends who were running with the South Freo Women's Footy team, but forgot my camera (still kicking myself massively). We got there a bit before 2.00pm Saturday to help finish setting the tent up. The tent city they created in the middle of the track was pretty impressive, with well over 100 teams pitching camp for the weekend.
At 3:00, everyone lined up on the track, with survivors leading the procession. Speeches were made that nobody could hear because the acoustics in the stadium were awful, and so everybody stood there dripping sweat and baking on the track. It was unseasonably and miserably hot, and with the crowd of people, very unpleasant. Each team marched with their banner, and it was quite fun to see everybody in various costumes. Aside from people just dressed in random sparkles or massive tutus, I was happy to see a couple full sets of Mario Brothers characters, some furries, and a half dozen smurfs who even had the curving hats going on (later, I was told the massage tent hated the smurfs for their gross shedding of their blue skin).
Sunday morning when I came back, a bunch of people had fallen out, but there were a couple dozen still running a super marathon. There's one man who is quite old, looks to be in his 70s, who has run the whole 24 hours each year for the last decade, and averages 240km each time. There were several people, including my friend, who used the weekend for their marathon training. Overall, it was a pretty awesome weekend. I did remember my camera on Sunday, so got a few pics, but I'll wait until I can find the official photos to post everything.
