In the West, we recommend having a total cholesterol of less than 200, with about 150 being ideal, and we don't really get worried until its about 250-300. Some times you may even see that total cholesterol less than 150 is unhealthy.
In the China Study, Dr. Campbell was able to take a survey of cholesterol levels for a large segment of the Chinese population. He found that the Chinese had a cholesterol range of 70-170mg/dL, half or less than what we consider normal in the West. And these correlated with significantly reduced risk of heart diseases, compared to the West.
What this is proving, which is true about everything in the West (including to my personal annoyance clothing and shoe sizes), is that we are lessening our standards here to accommodate all the slackers. There is no reason why we couldn't have similar cholesterol ranges if we'd eat better and exercise more.
